Mr Peter Duffy
SENIOR ASSOCIATE
Peter is a seasoned risk practitioner with a deep understanding and extensive experience in designing and implementing effective risk management approaches - particularly in the research sector context - having established and led the Enterprise Risk Function as a highlight of his 16-year career with the CSIRO, Australia’s National Science Agency.
Peter is currently the Director of Enterprise Risk Services for Business Olympian Group, a boutique consultancy focussed on organisational risk, resilience and governance. In that role Peter delivers outcomes that are reflective of his experience-based belief that effective risk management is vital in both protecting and enhancing the impact and value achieved by teams and organisations.
During his time with CSIRO Peter developed and applied CSIRO’s Risk Framework to support increased risk maturity and risk aware decision making at all levels of the organisation and across the research lifecycle. Specifically.
Supported the application of effective risk management processes in the context of research projects at the instigation (funding, investment and approval), execution and delivery phases.
Engaged at the Research Unit level to support and facilitate strategic and operational risk assessments as part of the planning and performance lifecycle and CSIRO’s annual investment (funding) process.
Worked extensively with the CSIRO Executive and Board to facilitate enterprise level strategic and operational risk assessments and to develop and promulgate organisational risk appetite and tolerance statements as the foundation for risk informed decision making across the organisation.
Developed an articulation of CSIRO’s Risk Profile, Risk Appetite and Tolerance in CSIRO’s Annual Corporate Plan that was recognised as best practice amongst Commonwealth Agencies.
Led the design of CSIRO’s Crisis Framework and from 2015 until 2021 chaired the standing CSIRO Issues Management Team which – in combination - successfully guided the organisational response to several critical issues and incidents, most particularly in regard to COVID-19. In 2021, the framework and approach were highlighted as best practice through a paper published by Gartner.
Peter is regularly invited to present at risk conferences on the challenge of effectively factoring risk into organisational decision making to both protect and enhance the impact and value achieved by teams and organisations.
