Prof Michael Keane

Adjunct Professor Michael Keane is a communications and cultural policy expert specialising in China and East Asa. He has lived in China and is a frequent visitor. Michael speaks Mandarin Chinese. He is the author or editor of 17 book manuscripts, over 180 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and since 2003 has been recipient of 5 Australian Research Council Discovery and Linkage grants totalling over $1.5 million. Michael continues to supervise PhD students.
From 1995 he has conducted research on Chinese and East Asian media industries; digital innovation policy in China and East Asia; cultural and media policy in Asia; creative cities, clusters and innovation; creative industries and regional development in East Asia.
He has collaborated with leading scholars in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and is currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the State Key Laboratory of Media and Communications at the Communications University of China (Beijing).
He has provided consultancy services for international bodies including UNCTAD and Oxford Analytica, as well as a range of governmental agencies in Australia.
He has been interviewed by the media including the South China Morning Post, ABC Foreign Correspondent, and Sydney Morning Herald on issues relating to China.
He contributes to major online forums such as The Conversation, East Asia Forum, Policy Forum (ANU) and Pearls and Irritations.
