Prof Fiona Cameron
SENIOR ASSOCIATE
Professor Cameron worked at the Australian Research Council (ARC) as an Executive Director (ED) for Biological Sciences and Biotechnology and as Senior Executive Director, commencing in 2012 and finishing in 2018. The Executive Director role was a strategic one, working closely with the CEO and engaging closely with the University sector. In addition to the discipline specialty role Fiona also had ARC funding scheme-specific responsibilities for the large investment schemes Centres of Excellence (CoE), Industrial Transformation Research Program (ITRP, since its launch) and Special Research Initiatives. She was Executive Director responsible for two rounds of CoE bids and two rounds of mid-term reviews of existing Centres and several Research Hubs (ITRP). She initiated and chaired the Research Impact group of Publicly Funded Research Agencies; the outcomes of this ongoing group are available through the ARC web site.
Prior to the ARC, Professor Cameron developed and was responsible for the University of Western Sydney’s Innovation Unit, working closely with the academics and staff at all levels and engaging with industry partners. Fiona thus has substantial experience with Intellectual Property and development of research translation. A significant research career at CSIRO in research management and in Molecular Biology underpins her understanding of research and research careers with the inherent difficulties specific to being a woman in research. She has contributed significantly through public talks and changes in funding rules at the ARC in an endeavor to level the playing field for women.
Professor Cameron graduated from the University of Sydney and gained her PhD in gene regulation at Macquarie University. She has completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors course and has Board experience. Fiona has an honorary Professorship at the Australian National University College of Science and sits on 3 advisory boards of research entities.
