Dr Alfredo Martinez-Coll

Dr. Alfredo Martinez-Coll is a senior life sciences and medtech professional with more than 25 years’ experience in research, university technology transfer, business development and government & industry stakeholder engagement; giving him a unique perspective and insight into innovation and commercialisation of medical research. With international work experience in Venezuela, the US and Australia, Alfredo brings together subject matter expertise across a number of areas in biomedical sciences and extensive professional and personal networks. Alfredo holds a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Louisiana Tech University (USA), a PhD and post-doctoral training in biomedical sciences from University of Technology, Sydney. His research experience includes the areas of artificial organs, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular physiology, membrane transport, and oxygen transport to tissue.

Following his research career, Alfredo spent 13 years holding senior positions in business development and technology transfer/commercialisation at public hospitals and in academia, reviewing hundreds of innovation ideas including novel therapeutics, diagnostics/biomarkers, medical devices, and cell therapies; negotiating and managing licensing agreements, as well as two significant equity investments. Alfredo’s experience extends to health and innovation precinct strategy and industry cluster development initiatives, engaging with national industry organisations, universities, medical research institutes (MRIs), researchers, research organisations, investor networks, relevant medtech/pharma (MTP) sector companies (incl small to medium enterprises), providing advice and reviewing applications for state and federal funding programs/grants (such as CRCs, CRC-P, Global Innovation Linkages, ARC Industry Transformation Research Program, BioMed Tech Horizons, MRFF, etc) coordinating collaboration activities with AusIndustry Entrepreneurs’ Program, Accelerating Commercialisation, Austrade, and the various Departments of Health at state level. Alfredo’s main areas of interest are sustainable funding for science, entrepreneurship and innovation, project management in science and ecosystem/precinct development. About

Alfredo is a Registered Technology Transfer Professional, a former member of the National Advisory Group of AusMedTech (Medical Devices group of AusBiotech), as well as a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
