Writing and Revising for Publication
Workshop
Presented by Prof Paula McDonald
Length: 2 two-hour workshops
Workshop 1:
Receiving a ‘revise and resubmit’ for a journal article can be both exciting and daunting. This workshop examines some of the skills and techniques necessary to successfully revise an article for publication. Drawing on examples of revision letters from journal editors and reviewers from her own submissions, Prof Paula McDonald will discuss how to take an organised and systematic approach to revising journal articles; how to address specific revision points which are easy, difficult and (almost) impossible; and how to frame rebuttals where they are warranted.
Workshop 2:
In the second workshop, participants will come prepared with the aims and scope statement of one pre-selected journal they are targeting for their research. We will discuss: Why did you choose the particular journal (quality indicators; word count; ontological tradition; to target a particular audience; ‘fit’ for your topic etc)? What are the key components of the aims and scope statement of your selected journal relative to the article you wish to publish? What kinds of research [field, theory, methods] does the journal prioritise? What restrictions are associated with submissions in your selected journal?; How has your topic evolved in the journal over time? What debates have emerged? What steps will you now take to bring your publication plan to fruition? Finally, writing strategies from the reviewer’s perspective will be discussed.
