Strategic Approaches To Developing An Academic Career
Workshop
Multiple possible Senior Associate presenters
Length: 3 Sessions X 3 Hours and 2 x 1 hour mentoring session
Early and mid-career researchers need support to move from being writers of good ‘near miss’ grants, to being able to frame insightful and imaginative proposals with a persuasive narrative about the significance and timeliness of the investigation and about their own track records, standing and influence. They need stronger research career planning, both as a cohort and as individuals.
Session 1. Challenges and opportunities in the research environment
This workshop establishes an understanding of: challenges in the research environment; cutting edge developments across disciplinary field/s; perceptions of challenges and opportunities; models of partnered collaboration; understandings of impact; options for building track record and influence; options for pursuing multiple pathways for project and developing a program of research and publication.
Session 2. Articulating your research ambitions
In this workshop, mid-career researchers use narrative and creative techniques to reflect on what research success is. They will be asked to identify both the factors which have contributed to their achievements and barriers to their research success. Participants are guided to develop a personal research plan, identifying research goals and activities for the coming 1-3 years.
Session 3. Project development
Participants are invited to discuss their current work in progress and test out project and publication ideas in development. The participants will work towards a compelling research question for their grant, explore the funding pathways available, matching the project to the right scheme and refining their publication profile, place in the disciplinary field/s and ROPE narrative.
