Renata Kokanović is a Professor of Sociology of Health at RMIT University’s School of Global, Urban and Social Studies. She has worked at the University of Melbourne, Monash University, and RMIT University, holding internationally prestigious senior research fellowships. Renata is an experienced research leader, mentor and research manager, having formerly been the Director of the Social Equity Research Centre at RMIT. She is an interdisciplinary scholar working at the intersections of critical health and mental health studies, critical social theory, and medical humanities. Her work has been widely published in peer-reviewed journals, including Social Science & Medicine, Sociology of Health & Illness, and Medical Humanities, as well as in a book and book chapters.
Throughout her career, Renata has led and collaborated on numerous research projects, receiving significant funding from bodies such as the Australian Research Council (ARC), Discovery and Linkage projects, and the National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC). She has been awarded category 2 to 4 funding, including from the National Mental Health Commission (NMHC), the Victorian Department of Health, and MIND Australia. She is a Founding Director of Healthtalk Australia, a suite of online resources grounded in qualitative research on lived experiences of health and illness in Australia.
